{"id":87,"date":"2008-09-06T10:13:49","date_gmt":"2008-09-06T14:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/?p=87"},"modified":"2008-12-13T17:18:18","modified_gmt":"2008-12-13T21:18:18","slug":"nebraska-nicest-people-nastiest-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/?p=87","title":{"rendered":"Nebraska: Nicest People, Nastiest Roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Monday September 1<sup>st<\/sup> we traveled through a cold rain (our first day of rain) from Casper to Lusk, Wyoming.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The chilly temps were compounded by wind- but it was finally a tail wind! (Photo by Meghan Sheridan)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As soon as we crossed the border we were greeted by friendly people: waves from drivers, smiles from strangers and people chatting with us every time we stopped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We found great hospitality and excitement about our project from Annette and her family at the Bunk House Motel.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>She even called the local media for us. \u00a0Check out the article from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thechadronnews.com\/articles\/2008\/09\/02\/chadron\/community\/news708.txt\" target=\"_blank\">Chadron Record.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Wednesday Sept 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Meghan, Pearson and I took the day and drove up to South Dakota to briefly explore the Badlands and see Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We had a great time and can\u2019t wait to return to spend more time in the Badlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/jpbadlands.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90\" title=\"Badlands\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/jpbadlands-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Julia &amp; Pearson in Badlands (Photo by Meghan Sheridan)\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia &amp; Pearson in Badlands (Photo by Meghan Sheridan)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Thursday Sept 4<sup>th<\/sup> we found a big itinerary snafu.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Chadron to Valentine was listed as a long, but manageable 109 miles, but was actually 139 miles.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>To make the day longer and more painful there are large cracks across the road- sometimes unfilled, sometimes covered with loose gravel- every 100<sup>th<\/sup> of a mile.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The unrelenting road condition did quite a number on P&amp;P\u2019s wrists, arms and saddles and really hurt Pearson\u2019s back and knee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/roadcracks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-94\" title=\"Nebraska Road Cracks\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/roadcracks-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Gravel covered cracks on Route 20 in Nebraska (Photo by Julia Wrona)\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gravel covered cracks on Route 20 in Nebraska (Photo by Julia Wrona)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When we arrived in Valentine late in the evening (after crossing into Central Time) we met Howard the super nice and hospitable owner of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepintheraine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Motel Raine<\/a>\u00a0who very generously put us up for free!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Somehow Pearson and Pete got up on Friday September 5<sup>th<\/sup> and rode 115 miles (which makes 564 miles in 5 days of cycling) to O\u2019Neill, Nebraska.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Late in the afternoon we passed the halfway point of the country\/ trip: Stuart, Nebraska.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We stopped and had a champagne celebration which was bittersweet because while it\u2019s great to make progress, we don\u2019t want to see the trip end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_91\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.longbikeback.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/ppchampagne.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91\" title=\"Pearson &amp;
